The maximum
permissible settlement depends upon the type of the soil, the type of the
foundation and structural framing system.
As per IS 1904-1986,
for RC structures;

The progressive
settlement on clays permits better strain adjustments in the structural members.
And for a unit increase in a total settlement of clay, there is less increase in differential
settlement compared to sand. That is why the maximum permissible settlement is more
for clayey soil compared to sandy soil.
